Glencoe High School valedictorian Sofia Ellis-Curry wins third place at national speech tournament

Sofia Ellis-Curry lifts her arms like a champion as she jokingly reminds Glencoe High math teacher Tom Stephens and career counselor Brooke Nova that, in fact, she is.Recent Glencoe High School graduate Sofia Ellis-Curry represented Oregon last week at the national speech and debate tournmanent in Dallas, Texas. Ellis-Curry, whom I profiled in the Oregonian, was hoping to place in the top 60 in the extemporaneous speaking event at the tournament.

In extemporaneous speaking, students don’t know what subject they’ll be asked to tackle. A judge hands out three possible topics; students choose one, then have 30 minutes to write a seven-minute speech.

In the fall, the Glencoe High valedictorian plans to attend Portland State University, where she will study international relations and women’s studies.
