Speaking up for school pay: Classroom aide says county ‘broke promise’

A Hardin Valley Academy teaching assistant is on a mission to get the Knox County school system to restore step pay increases he said were unjustly taken away from classified employees during the last budget process.
If the school system and Knox County school board don’t listen, Carroll Rousseau, 61, plans to take the matter higher — to the Knox County Commission and eventually to the Tennessee Department of Labor.
‘You accept that the county takes a position that they can’t give pay raises,’ he said. ‘The issue is, when you’re promised a step increase for staying with Knox County schools, it’s wrong to take it away.’
Schools Superintendent Jim McIntyre last week said ‘We value the people who work for us … and the work they do for our children. We recognize that compensation is an issue we need to be attentive to.’
The matter began in the spring when the district faced financial difficulties and had to find ways to close a $19 million budget gap.
