Back to School Sales Tax Break


Back to school tax break is announced held in August each year.
During tax break week state tax sales are suspended on the purchase of school supplies, computers, shoes and clothing. Many people from other states also take advantage of tax free season by driving to the neighboring states and shop for school supplies.

Currently back to school tax free period is implemented in:
Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky states.

Florida - 1 week back-to-school sales tax holiday will continue through August 2-8th, 2008.
UPDATE 25/07/08: Florida won't have tax break this year.

Books are excluded from the list of tax-free items this year, also hurricane supplies (such as flashlights, batteries etc) are rescheduled for early June instead.
Free from the state's 6% sales tax will be: backpacks, clothing and shoes priced at $50 or less and school supplies with a cost of less than $10.

This year (2008) Illinois has a chance to get a state tax break before the fall. However, the measure is still exists only as a plan and currently awaits for a decision from above.

Tip: if you are going to travel to one of those states in August, it may be worth taking a list of school items with you and checking out on the great school sales there.
