Buying the right backpack or a school bag
Don't fall for the cheapest backpacks for your child at the back to school sales.
They often have lower quality material, which is going to rip apart after a month at school; they also often come with bad shoulder straps, which will hurt kid's neck and shoulders; watch out for low quality zippers, a broken one will be a pain in the neck as the kid starts losing the school items...
Enough said, let's shop for school backpacks and bags wisely.

Things you need to keep in mind when buying a school backpack:
- Choose a size of the back pack that fits your child age. Although big backpack may look cool, they also can be easily overloaded with school items. Kids shouldn't wear heavy bags, as it may lead to muscle strains and further posture problems. Pediatricians recommend bags weight between maximum 20% of child's body weight.
- Select a backpack with good, strong and well padded shoulder straps. Think of the quality of the backpack you'd buy if you went on a long hiking trip. No need to look for the same high standards, you may not find them in children's backpacks, but knowing the goals helps to make a choice.
- Make sure a backpack itself is not heavy and has all necessary adjustment straps to fit child's body snuggly.
- If found a good quality backpack, don't be strict about the color. Let children express themselves and pick colors they want.

My children ask me to buy them new backpacks every school year.
That is quite expensive.
I told them that backpacks aren't that old and can be used longer, at least for one more year.
But I got an unexpected response: that they are embarrassed now to go with that silly (they loved it last year, but now you hear it - silly) "Happy puppy" written on their old backpacks.
What can you do there. Kids confidence at school means a lot for me.
Last time we went to buy a new backpack we started a discussion about styles and classic never fading look, which they may then decorate with small backpack at their choice with ribbons, chains, beiges. And of course change the look as their likings change.

If your kids beg for a new backpack which you can't afford this year, check out garage sales. Some good solutions can be found here.
Also if nothing comes out, convince your child to go with an old backpack for few weeks, and explain, that you will take him/her shopping for a new backpack in mid September when large store will have clearance sales, so you can afford buying a new backpack.
Should I buy a bag or a backpack to my 10 years old son?
He insists that it is "cool" to have a bag, while backpacks are for kids..
I'm concerned about the health issues since backpacks are more suited for carrying heavy books while bags in their majority aren't. Any ideas?
What are the features of a good bag?
I'd add some additional features which are nice to have on school backpacks for kids:
Besides shoulder, waist and hip straps it is helpful to have so called compression straps, which can squeeze a school backpack when it is partially loaded, thus preventing the load from shifting to the sides.
Mesh fabric on shoulder straps and backside of a backpack makes it less sweaty on hot days.
It is nice also to have some light reflector strips on the backpack in case you expect children walking form school during the late hours.
I hope you like these comments.
